Celebrating Strength and Resilience: National Recovery Month at Centres for Health and Healing

National Recovery Month is a time to promote and support new treatments, therapies, and recovery practices while honouring those in recovery and celebrating the incredible gains they’ve made in overcoming substance use disorder.

Originally established in 1989 under the banner “Treatment Works!,” the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) event aimed to highlight the dedication of addiction professionals. In 1998, it was renamed “National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month” to be more inclusive—not only of the professionals in the addiction field but also to honour those struggling with mental health and substance use disorders and the challenging journey of recovery.

By 2011, the event evolved into what we know as today’s “National Recovery Month,” expanding its focus to include healthcare professionals, behavioural health therapists, and all individuals in recovery.

The month-long event aims to promote awareness and education on mental health and substance use disorders, as well as to provide support to affected families and patients. Originating in the USA, Recovery Month has grown globally over time and received increased attention in recent years due to the growing opioid epidemic, soaring overdose rates, and increased gloabl awareness of the need for mental health and addiction resources and services.

Centres for Health and Healing celebrates the resilient recovery community and the dedication of service providers, families, and communities that make recovery possible. We believe in building an awareness of recovery and promoting and supporting treatments to help people recover from substance use disorders and mental health disorders.

How Centres for Health and Healing can help you

At Centres for Health and Healing, we are a professional addiction treatment centre treating and diagnosing a range of alcohol and drug substance use disorders.

We provide customized, integrated treatment programs to help you manage the symptoms of your addiction, allowing you to develop healthy coping skills and relapse prevention strategies so that your condition no longer has such a distressing impact and control on your life.

At CFHH, we believe individualized treatment involves creating a personalized treatment plan that addresses your unique needs, requirements, and treatment goals rather than adopting a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach.

This type of plan assesses all the components you must unpack and work through for lasting recovery. Just like there’s no single cause for addiction, there is also no one thing that treats the condition.

A typical treatment program for substance use disorders at our recovery centre in Canada might involve a combination of the following:

  • Medical Detox to safely manage withdrawal symptoms
  • Treatment with our Addiction Medicine Professional, Dr. Seyedhossein Vahidtari
  • Behavioural therapy such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT)
  • Trauma treatment
  • One-on-one counselling with one of our experienced mental health specialists, such as Victoria Conforti, Giulia Giatti, Nicholas Cimino, or another member of our counselling team
  • Group therapy
  • Comprehensive aftercare programs

We provide a safe, nurturing space for you to explore and address any troubling, challenging or negative thoughts and behaviours that may be disrupting your life and those you care about.

At CFHH, our goal is to give you the tools and techniques to help you manage your thoughts and behaviours, allowing you to control your symptoms rather than your symptoms controlling you.

We do this by exploring and addressing any maladaptive thoughts and belief patterns as well as any traumatic experiences you may have encountered in the past.

Once these painful experiences and emotions are reprocessed, you will no longer see them as distressing or upsetting as you once did, leading to increased tolerance to stress and higher levels of resilience.

As part of your treatment, we will explore alternative ways to help you manage intense emotions and daily stressors rather than numbing or blocking out painful emotions through alcohol, drug use, or other unhelpful habits.

This approach to recovery can be particularly beneficial for those who also have a co-occurring disorder such as depression or borderline personality disorder.

Ultimately, just as each story of addiction is unique, each person’s experience with recovery will be different.

We understand addiction is complicated

Addiction is a profoundly complicated disease involving various approaches and therapeutic modalities to help people overcome and achieve lasting sobriety.

Statistique Canada reports, “An estimated 21% of Canadians met the criteria for substance use disorder, while 3.5 million met the criteria for mood disorder.” This means about 6 million people will meet the definition of addiction at some point in their lifetime.
